OMEGA Speedmaster - 56th Moonlanding Anniversary
OMEGA remembered humankind’s very first Moon landing, and the role that its Speedmaster watches played in that legendary mission.
On July 21st, 1969, history was made when Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin took humanity’s first steps on the Moon. During this iconic mission, each astronaut wore an OMEGA Speedmaster, making it the first watch worn on the lunar surface, a proud milestone for the brand that endured.
In 2025, OMEGA celebrated 60 years since the Speedmaster was officially qualified by NASA after passing rigorous tests for manned space missions. This qualification paved the way for its use in the Mercury, Gemini, and Apollo programs. With 600 million people witnessing the Moon landing live, OMEGA continued to support space exploration with reliable timepieces, ready for future giant leaps.
The Speedmaster was launched in 1957 but its official space legacy started in 1965, when NASA qualified it for use on its piloted missions. Since then, it had been worn on all six lunar landings and earned the nickname “the Moonwatch”.
